چکیده

Blanton and Jaccard (2006) questioned the 4-test regression method used by Greenwald et al. (2002) to test a pure multiplicative theory. The present authors address Blanton and Jaccard’s concerns with a combination of simulations and meta-analysis. Simulations show that (a) Blanton and Jaccard’s preferred simultaneous regression method has a severe power loss in testing multiplicative theories when predictor variables’ means deviate from rational zero values, and (b) Greenwald et al.’s 4-test method has a more limited weakness when predictor means deviate from rational zero in the positive direction. Metaanalyses showed that aggregate analyses of Greenwald et al.’s 5 experiments confirmed a multiplicative theory regardless of which analysis method was used. However, only the 4-test method could confirm a pure multiplicative theory.

The theoretical diagnosis of skepticism

Radical skepticism about the external implies that no belief about the external is even prima facie justified. A theoretical reply to skepticism has four stages. First, show which theories of epistemic justification support skeptical doubts (show which theories, given other reasonable assumptions, entail skepticism). Second, show which theories undermine skeptical doubts (show which theories, g...

Consequential Validity of the Implicit Association Test

Numeric values of psychological measures often have an arbitrary character before research has grounded their meanings, thereby providing what S. J. Messick (1995) called consequential validity (part of which H. Blanton and J. Jaccard, 2006, this issue, now identify as metric meaningfulness). Some measures are predisposed by their design to acquire meanings easily, an example being the sensitiv...

Psychoanalytic Theories of Religion in Protestant Contexts

Psychoanalysts since Sigmund Freud have tried to discuss the role of religion in modern societies. Freud himself saw religion as an illusion which had struck neurotics, while Slavoj Žižek viewed it as some sort of “perversion” which functioned in the cycle of law-transgression. In this essay, I dig into these theories to uncover traces of Lutheran interpretations of Paul’s words on the Jewish l...

An Exegetic Analysis of the Role of Faith in Human Innate Relation to God as Understood by the Holy Quran

As viewed by the most contemporary world scholars, true faith, being based on the human heart's relationship to the Supreme God, is a safe source for man to become free from some ominous - though not intrinsic - incremental advances of empirical science and prefers man and society`s harmony for attaining inner peace. Their institution prefers this basic need. Faith with such qualities as confid...
